Stories to Savour

Tory Pratt wanted to start a business. Her parents owned a catering business in Philadelphia and she had helped them start a specialty smoked fish enterprise. So, starting a business associated with food seemed most likely. Though her path was not direct, there is something inevitable about her decision to launch Pratt Standard Cocktail Company.

Tory attended Georgetown University and earned a degree in international development. After graduation, she joined a non-profit helping developing countries improve their court systems. However, the love of food was never far from her mind.

During college, she started a food appreciation club. She insists it was because college food was so terrible. After college, researching and testing old recipes became a hobby. All this time, the entrepreneur gene was active.

Tory watched the emergence and rapid growth of the craft distillery industry. Her aha moment came when her exploration of old recipes showed that the classic mixers of the past had been compromised and cheapened beyond recognition. Grenadine no longer had pomegranates as a base. Tonic water used medical grade (read tasteless) quinine. High fructose corn syrup in even so called premium mixers. At that point, the entrepreneur gene and the itch to launch a business took over. There was an opportunity to deliver the proverbial “better mousetrap.” Pratt Standard Cocktail Company was born.
