Stories to Savor
Capron, Virginia is close to US Route 95. It’s a beautiful corner of America. Quiet. Peaceful. Lush. It makes you realize that getting off the interstate is good for one’s mental health. (That may be a metaphor for life - you decide.)
Patsy and Bob Marks faced a generational challenge. They lived in a kind of Eden and had been farming peanuts there for 100 years. Their children (Robert, Megan, Kelly) had graduated from college and the issue was literally, “how you’re gonna to keep ‘em down on the farm.......”
Most problems have an answer, and these are smart, creative people. Their solution—to become a business that 20-somethings could see as attractive and exciting. But how?
They decided to stop selling their raw peanuts to others. Instead, they would process, pack and sell their crop themselves. They had a great product and talent and energy. What else would any startup want?
A plant was built on the farm to process and package their peanuts. Graphics were designed and a sales marketing effort launched. They suddenly had a growing,dynamic business selling its product nationwide. A worthy challenge for twenty-somethings and their parents. The entire family worked to make the business a success and a new chapter written in a family’s personal history.
