Stories to Savor
Allan Benton is a legend in Eastern Tennessee. Almost singlehandedly, he preserved the traditional flavors of real country ham and bacon. He popularized a great regional taste across America.
He grew up in Southwest Virginia. He watched his family slaughter and cure ham and bacon his entire life. It was 1973 and he was teaching school in Eastern Tennessee. He bought a small ham producer and Benton Hams was launched.
For years, the business just barely survived. While others were implementing methods that were lower cost and faster, Allan kept refining the traditional methods. He could not compete with lower cost competitors.
One day, a order appeared from a restaurant in New York City. Allan decided to fill it, even though he never expected to get paid. The customer paid. Additional orders started coming from other New York restaurants. Soon they the orders were coming from all over the USA.
Great chefs appreciated the product that Benton Hams produced and were very happy to pay for that quality.
