Blueberry jam is a classic American food.  We all know the saying “as American as blueberry pie.”

The days of the American frontier may be over, but here is a chance to connect to that time.  Blueberries grown wild in their natural habitat, hand foraged by Native Americans and simply processed for us.

The Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, located in northern Minnesota, is a sovereign nation about the size of Rhode Island.  the band collectively owns Red Lake Nation Foods, a for profit company.

On these tribal lands, the blueberries grow wild, producing a flavor that is rich and pure.  This blueberry jam is a delicacy that connects us to a proud culture and honored traditions.

Stories to Savor

The Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians, located in northern Minnesota, is a sovereign nation about the size of Rhode Island.  These lands are the traditional home of the Chippewa.  The United States did not “give” it to them.  At the end of the nineteenth century, tribal leaders resisted pressure to end collective ownership of their land.  That collective ownership of property continues to this day.  The successful effort to protect collective ownership of property is celebrated each year on July 6.

To this day, the land—and Red Lake Nation Foods, a for-profit food business—are owned collectively by all members of the band.

Lower Red Lake is the largest lake in Minnesota and perfect for plant life that requires lots of water.  Their rice, blueberry and fruits grow wild and are foraged by members of the Nation.

These delicacies connect us to a proud culture and ancient, honored traditions. Wild rice that really grows in wild. Blueberry jam and chokeberry jelly direct from nature to us.
