Brought to the U.S. by the Melngailis family after WWII, Black Rooster’s Traditional Baltic 100% Rye loaf is a nutritious and flavor-filled break from any bread you know. Made with only 100% rye, this hearty staple bread of northeastern Europe, or “rupjmaize,” has a unique, earthy, and tangy malted flavor that will bring new life to even the most extravagant open-faced sandwiches. It is also the perfect complement for cheese and wine.

Black Rooster breads are unsliced for freshness. No wheat or other grains are used in their products.

Stories to Savor

This is a story about war, refugees, memories, and starting a new life. It is also about family and how America benefits from new arrivals that bring talent and diversity to our society.

The Melngailis family escaped Latvia in front of the advancing Red army at the end of WWII. After the war ended, they endured 5 years as displaced persons in a camp located in Germany. Millions across Europe had similar circumstances. Going home was not an option.

The family ultimately emigrated to The United States and settled in rural Pennsylvania. John’s mother made the rye breads they knew from home. It was a way to recall people and places from the past.

The Melngailis family thrived. Both John and his brother Ivars earned PhDs in science and engineering and have had long and productive careers. John is now professor emeritus in engineering at University of Maryland.

Neither John nor his brother had careers that connected to food.  The motivation to launch Black Rooster breads was to honor their mother’s memory.  It does more than that.  These breads and all the other traditions immigrants bring to America make us a dynamic, vibrant, fascinating place.
